This webinar offers a different perspective to solving common tax issues. Michelle and Serj will use case studies and work through the following issues, consider the tax impact, provide solution and conclude with legislative references where applicable.

Case study 1 will cover common tax issues with shareholder current accounts, associated persons rules, to charge interest or not on loan advances, debt forgiveness and how distributions to shareholders are taxed. When the case study is complete, the participant will have deeper practical understanding of the issues commonly faced by shareholders in a business structure.

Case study 2 will cover a returning Kiwi who purchases a subdivisible lifestyle block and will work through issues around transitional residency, tax implications on short-term letting, tax issues on subdivisions and common issues to consider when property developing. When the case study is complete, the participant will have a practical understanding of transitional residency and common tax issues arising with property development and those with short-term letting.

This webinar is practical, at a semi advanced level and targeted at advisors with individual clients and small businesses.

Michelle Turner, Senior Associate Tax, Bellingham Wallace.

As a tax specialist Michelle has been advising on New Zealand and international corporate tax matters for 20+ years. Michelle has extensive experience in global mobility including leading mobility teams and managing tax compliance programs for large multi-nationals. Michelle has written for a large commerce publishing house drafting content for some of New Zealand best known tax publications.

As part of her current role Michelle provides a dedicated consulting service to our business advisory division and our many clients. Michelle has a particular interest in advising on land transactions and GST.

Serjit Singh, Head of TaxBellingham Wallace.

Serj has over 25 years of experience across a wide range of tax practice areas. Serj started his early career at KPMG and Inland Revenue. He then joined the Shell Oil Company where he managed all things tax for Shell companies in Asia Pacific. Serj brings his experience to Bellingham Wallace and believes in making the complex world of tax, simple.

Serj enjoys advising on property tax, structuring transactions for tax efficiency, and working with clients to achieve the best outcome through Inland Revenue dealings. Given his global experience, Serj has practical insight and experience in international tax structuring, transfer pricing, efficient structuring of foreign investments and global mobility with a focus on Transitional Residency.

Serj is a Fellow Chartered Accountant of CAANZ with a Bachelor of Management Studies from the University of Waikato and a Master of Taxation Studies from The University of Auckland.
